Kiyoi No Shinsei
A system of jiu-jitsu and self defense with a lineage that runs from Harlem to Thurmont.
Dr. Moses Powell was born on January 13, 1941. As a teenager he excelled at boxing. In Harlem, New York, in 1954, he met his martial arts teacher, Florendo Visitacion, known as Professor Vee, and became a student of the Vee-Jitsu Ryu system.
He worked harder than any other student. As a green belt he was allowed to instruct third and fourth degree black belts. Asked how, he answered: "That was because I did my homework and they didn't."
In 1960 Sensei Powell began teaching his own system, Self-Defense Complete. In 1964 he renamed it Modern Jiu Jitsu, and in 1965 he demonstrated at the World's Fair in New York. In 1968, with his teacher's permission, he named the system Sanuces Ryu.
In 1971 he became the first martial artist invited to perform at the United Nations. In 1974, before a sold-out crowd of 20,000 at Madison Square Garden, he performed his now famous one-finger rollout.
Hanshi Darryl King, 10th Dan, is a direct student of Dr. Powell and the chief instructor of all KNS schools of Sanuces Ryu. He teaches at the World of Sanuces Training Facility in Forestville, Maryland. Mushin School of Combat, led by Shihan Khalil Abdullah, is part of the same family.
Thurmont Academy of Self Defense carries that lineage to Main Street, Thurmont.
